The VLA (Victoria Legal Aid) selected the ActiveDocs Opus document automation and compliance solution for generation of legal documents. The VLA completed a 3 month in-depth Proof of Concept (POC) which enabled them to automate over 200 document templates, and to determine the practical use of the solution within VLA’s environment and infrastructure.

Hans Wolf, VLA’s Chief Information Officer, said: “A key requirement was that our lawyers could access the templates on our tablets and generate documents both internally and out of the office.”

The VLA project team were provided ActiveDocs Designer training by i2 Management, ActiveDocs partner in Melbourne, together with initial consulting and design advice.

VLA has now created 300 templates, which are integrated with the VLA’s Grants system, and is on track to achieve their aim of 900 templates by the end of November. The ease of template design in ActiveDocs Opus means that more than four documents can be automated, connected to different data sources, and tested every working day. The project objective is to extend the VLA precedent access solution to their 300 lawyers in early 2015. The ActiveDocs web interface was a key consideration, as VLA’s lawyers are often at court, at offsite conferences; and the ability to generate case documents from anywhere using the ActiveDocs interface will significantly improve service to VLA’s clients.

Skip Dostine, ActiveDocs VP for Business Development, Australia and Asia-Pacific, said: “The VLA is the latest example of how efficiency and customer service in public legal space can be improved through smart use of technology. ActiveDocs Opus enables VLA’s mobile workforce to quickly create and review documents regardless of their current location. They can access ActiveDocs Opus on their desktop computers in the office, when working offsite or travelling they can use mobile devices, tablets or mobile phones.”
